Ricky Gervais slams ‘disgusting’ dog fights as tragic pooch with teeth smashed in rescued from illegal ring.

Dog fighting is allegedly on the rise and has been slammed as ‘disgusting’ by animal lover and award winning actor Ricky Gervais.

Meet the tragic bait dog who had her teeth smashed with pliers after being forced into the depraved world of dog fighting.

Poor Cupcake had multiple fight scars, had been repeatedly slammed against walls and is now facing blindness.

Her treatment – and the dog fighting world – has been condemned by animal lover and award-winning actor Ricky Gervais.

The sickening injuries found on Cupcake, a Staffordshire bull terrier, are typical of an animal used as bait to train other dogs to fight.

She was found with teeth that had been crudely removed with pliers (to stop her from defending herself against dogs that trained on her) and she had sustained multiple facial and abdominal scarring.

Her injuries are so bad, having been slammed against a wall or punched that her eye may have to be removed.

It is clear she had also been severely overbred, forced to breed litter after litter of pups destined for a life of fighting or bait.

Cupcake’s rescuer, who must remain anonymous for fear of reprisals from the dog-fighting world has worked tirelessly to help the traumatised dog regain her confidence and settle down in a loving home.

She said “Cupcake’s story is unfortunately not isolated. She is not the first and devastatingly won’t be the last animal to have suffered at the hands of cruel and cowardly animal abusers.

“Cupcake endured horrific injuries and for what? Sick fun? A bit of cash? Boredom?”

“Something desperately needs to be done to stop dog fighting. Realistically it’s not going to stop overnight, but I am confident that the plight of other dogs like Cupcake will be helped by the League’s campaign.”

Ricky Gervais told League Against Cruel Sport: “I am deeply saddened to hear that illegal dog fighting is apparently on the rise in the UK.

“Anyone who likes the spectacle of two terrified animals fighting is a psychopath.

“Dogs are naturally loyal friends, who have to be abused and mistreated to act in this way.

“They don’t want to be part of this.

“They are literally fighting for survival. Please never attend anything like this and if you suspect such a disgusting event may be taking place somewhere, then please report it immediately. This has to stop.”

Cupcake has now become the ‘poster dog’ for a campaign calling for tougher sentencing and a national register to tackle the scourge of dog fighting across the UK.

Eduardo Gonçalves, Chief Executive of the League Against Cruel Sports said: “As the face of our campaign to stamp out dog fighting, Cupcake is opening people’s eyes to the horrors of this sadistic sport.

“Despite her horrendous experience and terrible wounds, Cupcake has learnt to trust again and is a wonderful loving and fun dog. All credit to her rescuer.
